Cushion covers — quietly considered, quietly beautiful

The right cushion cover is the easiest way to refresh a room without redecorating. Our edit of linen, velvet and botanical print cushion covers is small on purpose — we only stock pieces we'd put on our own sofa in Cumbria.

You'll find sage greens, mustard ochres, dusty proteas, and natural linens — colours drawn from English wildflower meadows and South African fynbos in equal measure. Most covers come in standard 45cm and 50cm sizes to fit any sofa or armchair pad. Pads sold separately so you can layer feather or hollowfibre to your preference.

What we look for

• Natural fabrics first — washed linen, cotton velvet, organic cotton. They soften beautifully with use.
• Hand-finished edges — whip-stitched, frilled, piped. The detail you notice when you pick one up.
• Hidden zip closures so the cushion stays looking like a cushion.
• Small batch — most pieces are made in runs of 50-100. When they're gone, they're often gone.

How to style them

For a sofa, the rule we follow is odd numbers, varied sizes, mixed textures. Try a 50cm linen at the back, a 45cm velvet in front, and a 30cm bolster or rectangular cushion in a botanical print to break the symmetry. For armchairs, one well-chosen 45cm cover does more than three competing ones.
