Sizing Guide
The right size makes everything look intentional. The wrong size makes a beautiful piece feel awkward. Here is how we think about it.
Cushion covers — sizes that work
- 50 × 50cm — the workhorse. Sits beautifully on most sofas and reading chairs.
- 45 × 45cm — slightly smaller. Perfect as a layered front cushion or for an armchair.
- 30 × 50cm (lumbar / rectangular) — the styling cushion. Goes in front of larger square cushions, or as back support on a deep armchair.
How many on a sofa?
- Two-seater: three cushions total. Larger at the back, mid in front, smallest or lumbar on top.
- Three-seater: five cushions total. Mirror left-right with an odd one breaking the symmetry.
- Armchair: one well-chosen 45cm cover. Anything more crowds it.
The pad sizing trick
For that designer-styled fullness, use a pad 5cm larger than the cover. A 50cm pad in a 45cm cover gives you a generous, plump look. A pad the same size as the cover always looks slightly flat.
Rugs — what size for which room
Living room
- Sofa alone: 160 × 230cm minimum. Front legs of the sofa should sit on the rug.
- Sofa + 2 chairs: 200 × 290cm or 240 × 330cm. ALL furniture front legs should sit on the rug.
- Open-plan: 240 × 330cm under the seating zone helps define the space.
Bedroom
- Under-bed (double or king): 200 × 290cm. Should extend 60cm past each side of the bed.
- Bed runners (each side): 80 × 200cm runners along each side, leaving a strip of floor at the foot.
- Statement only: a 120 × 170cm rug at the foot of the bed.
Hallway
- Runners 60–80cm wide. Length to suit the corridor — leave at least 30cm of floor showing at each end.
Dining room
Rug should extend 60cm past the table edge on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
- 4-seater table: 200 × 200cm
- 6-seater table: 200 × 290cm
- 8-seater table: 240 × 330cm
The golden rule
If you are between two sizes, size up. Undersized cushions and rugs are the single most common reason a room looks not-quite-right. A slightly oversized piece always looks intentional.
Tableware — how many do I need?
- Everyday for 4: 4 dinner plates, 4 side plates, 4 bowls, 4 mugs.
- Entertaining for 6–8: 8 of everything plus 2 serving bowls and a large platter.
- Hosting Christmas: 12 of everything. Something always gets broken or left in the dishwasher.
